ABSTRACT: What does society need, what are the desirable outcomes and how can Chemical Engineers work in partnership with other stakeholders to make it happen? This question currently features high on the agenda in professional institutions concerned with the chemical sciences all over the world.IChemE is responding through the establishment of a novel ‘roadmap’ project that will assess the challenges facing humankind, identify and prioritise a menu of chemical engineering solutions and set out a clear position on the technical, economic and regulatory drivers that are needed in order secure sustainable development in the process sector. The presentation will describe the work of a series of technical policy commissions that are tasked with producing position papers looking at four areas of specific interest to chemical engineers:§ Sustainability & Sustainable Chemical Technology§ Health, Safety, Environment & the Management of Risk§ Energy, Food & Water§ Bio Systems & Bio EngineeringThe development of the position papers involves a two stage web-based stakeholder consultation that engages with 25,000 chemical engineers internationally. This process will described in detail and the initial findings of the roadmap project will be reported to the congress.
