Globalization and Cooperation:
Chemical Engineers Working to Solve Problems in the Next Decade
  H. Scott Fogler 2009
President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers
Ame & Catherine Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering,
and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor
                       The University of Michigan
                 Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-2136

The next decade will be filled with challenges for chemical engineers ranging from access to clean water to meeting the world’s energy needs. Chemical engineers will be at the center of researching alternative energy sources such as fuel and solar cells and addressing the problem that the 1 in 6 people of the world that do not have access to clean water. As we consider the path ahead, we need to inventory the skills of our current graduates to see how they relate to upcoming technological and societal challenges.
Current graduates are well trained in the fundamentals of chemical engineering and they are as bright as any who have come before them. However, as part of the millennium generation, they have their own characteristics and ideas significantly different from the previous X generation. Consequently, we will see changes not only in the demand for technology and societal needs, but also in the way recent graduates perform/interact in the workplace and the way they prioritize problems.
We need to think how we will train chemical engineers with technical updates as well as developing soft skills in the work place. This presentation will discuss what American Institute of Chemical Engineers is doing to address these problems and how we can work with sister chemical engineering societies throughout the world to solve these problems and make sure our society members can obtain the skill sets necessary to succeed in the next decade.
